On Oct 28, the 7th round of SINOPEC China Touring Car Championship 2018 was concluded in Shanghai Tianma Circuit. In the main event of Super Cup, Dongfeng Yueda Kia Racing Team’s Andre Couto won the race, while Changan Ford Racing Team’s Andy Yan and Josh Burdon finished the 2nd and 3rd respectively, bringing back the Manufacture’s Champion for the team. In the main event of China Cup, LEO Racing’s Zheng Shangguan won the victory. His teammate Li Lin finished the 3rd. GAC Toyota Racing Team’s Deng Baowei finished the 2nd, and the team also won the Manufacturer's Champion. With one round left, GAC Toyota Racing Team has already secured the Manufacture’s Championship of 2018 thanks to a significant 88-points lead.
The TAG Heuer Speed Award went to SAIC Volkswagen 333 Racing Team’s Colin Turkington and Motive Racing’s Xie Jiaxing for their fastest lap time in qualifying session of each category.
Super Cup: Changan Ford Racing Won the Victory
According to reverse grid regulation, Changan Ford Racing Team’s Andy Yan started from the 1st, while Dongfeng Yueda Kia Racing Team’s Andre Couto started from the 2nd. Josh Burdon started from the 5th, but climbed up to the 2nd right after the start. Yang Fan and He Xiaole were on the 4th and 5th place. Andre started pushing towards Andy in lap 2. After ten laps, Yang Fan was still on the 4th place, ahead of a group of cars battling hard. In the following five laps, Zhang Zhiqiang lost his 5th place in the intensive fight.
In lap 18, Couto put lots of pressure on Yan and managed to overtake him, getting the lead. Later, the battle between Alex Fontana and Colin Turkington attracted the attention since their position will decide the Manufacture’s Champion of this race. In the end, Fontana finished the race with 0.6 seconds behind Turkington. Couto won the race with 4 seconds lead, ahead of Andy Yan and Josh Burdon.
A driver can get 45 points at the maximum in one weekend, which means the Driver’s Championship will be decided between Ye Hongli and Zhang Zhiqiang within Dongfeng Yueda Kia Racing Team in the final round. The Manufacture’s Championship is not decided yet, so Dongfeng Yuedia Kia Racing Team, SAIC Volkswagen 333 Racing Team and Changan Ford Racing Team will gear up for the thrilling battle for the trophy in the final round.
China Cup: GAC Toyota Racing Team Secured the Championship
In the race on Sunday, Leo Racing’s Li Huiwei started from the 1st. GAC Toyota Racing Team’s Zhang Hanbiao also started from the front row. Li and Zhang fought for the inside lane in turn one, leaving the out lane to Motive Racing’s Peng Li Xin. Later, Zheng Shangguan also overtook Zhang Hanbiao. In turn 9, Peng Lixin almost crashed into Li Huiwei, but luckily they were all back to the race. Zheng Shangguan took this chance and claimed the lead.
After three laps, Deng Baowei climbed up to the 4th. In lap 6, Li Lin and Peng Lixin had a collision in turn 1, costing several positions of Peng. Deng Baowei saw the chance and climbed up to the 2nd, ahead of Li Lin. In the end, Zheng Shangguan was the first one crossing the finish line, ahead of Deng Baowei and Li Lin.
After this round, GAC Toyota Racing Team has already won the Manufacture’s Championship of 2018. Meanwhile, the team’s three drivers Zhang Hanbiao, Deng Baowei and Liu Yang are all on the shortlists of Driver’s Championship. Their closest rival is Zongheng Racing Team’s Yang Xi.
